Our History
Dielectrics was founded in 1954 by three individuals: Mr. Bill Kirby, Prof. MCCarry from MIT, and Mr. Margolis. Initially, the company built high frequency welding equipment which was sold to manufacturers and fabricators in the vinyl products industry. They operated out of a converted house on Cochran Street in Chicopee Falls.
Meanwhile, Earl Stahl, who had been in a nineteen-year partnership with a heat sealing company that manufactured children's games, was looking to move on and establish a new venture in the RF field.
Dielectrics which at that time was solely owned by one of its founders, Bill Kirby, offered Earl Stahl the opportunity and challenge he was seeking. In the spring of 1959, Earl purchased the company and started anew. The direction of the company was then changed from an equipment manufacturer to that of a manufacturer and fabricator of custom vinyl products.
The company soon outgrew these first surroundings and moved to larger facilities on East Street where the company continued to prosper as new products came on board.
In 1971, Dielectrics was forced to move due to the Chicopee Falls urban renewal project. In the summer of 1971, the relocation to the newer modern plant at 6 Second Avenue was completed. Continued expansion of product lines meant the need to lease additional warehouse space and manufacturing facilities for a sewing division on Front Street in Indian Orchard. Operating with these two locations proved inefficient. In 1978, Dielectrics made the move to its current facility located at 300 Burnett Road.
Subsequent decades continued to bring about change and growth:
1980's - Dielectrics expands current location to 130K square feet, continues to expand production as well as new R&D capabilities.
1990's - A JV with a European medical bag manufacturer is both formed and subsequently acquired. Dielectrics invests in two medical manufacturing areas, rated at class 100K and 10K. Begins to build an extensive IP portfolio of processes and product features. Significant investments are made in R&D staffing and prototyping laboratories.
2000's - DXM is formed in Xiamen, China and first medical product line is transferred. R&D capabilities are expanded, including a pilot production room and professional product development staff. Dielectrics celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2004, with continued family ownership and management.
This current facility is supported by over 175 designers, engineers, and manufacturing personnel. The company has expanded its Class 10,000 and Class 100,000 clean room facilities. Our manufacturing, quality, and development facilities are state-of-the-art and are managed in an ISO 13485 and 9001 quality environment.
